Wankidi Bamboo Cultivation & Skill Development Cluster
Five-Acre Dryland Demonstration Plantation | Wankidi Mandal, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad District, Telangana
Making Bamboo the Crop of Tribal Communities, and Skilling Their Profession.
About the Project
The Wankidi Bamboo Cultivation & Skill Development Cluster is a proposed initiative of the Bamboo Academy for Research and Entrepreneurship Foundation (BARE) to demonstrate the feasibility of bamboo cultivation under dryland conditions. The project proposes a five-acre demonstration plantation to evaluate suitable bamboo species, cultivation practices, water requirements, plant survival, growth, and production costs.
The initiative aims to connect scientific cultivation methods with farmer training, nursery development, tribal livelihoods, and bamboo-based enterprise opportunities. The demonstration site will generate practical evidence before cultivation is expanded to participating farmers and community lands.

Our Objectives
Demonstrate Dryland Cultivation
Evaluate commercially relevant bamboo species and cultivation methods under local climatic and soil conditions.
Generate Scientific Evidence
Record plant survival, growth, irrigation needs, labour inputs, and cultivation costs.
Develop Skills and Livelihoods
Support practical training for farmers, youth, nursery workers, and women's self-help groups.
Promote Bamboo Enterprises
Explore links between cultivation, planting material, bamboo products, and potential buyers.

Why Wankidi?
BARE assessed the Utnoor/Udumpur, Kuntala, and Wankidi landscapes against the project's requirements for dryland cultivation, community access, skills development, nursery linkages, and future expansion. The Wankidi/Salpalguda corridor was selected as the preferred operational area because of its potential for field demonstrations, community mobilisation, and farmer engagement.
Final land selection remains subject to verification of land title, boundaries, non-forest status, water availability, road access, and lawful government allotment.
What Will Be Demonstrated?
The proposed five-acre site will function as a field demonstration block to evaluate bamboo cultivation practices and generate evidence for future expansion. The site is intended for cultivation trials rather than permanent buildings or a processing factory.

2. Water Management
Assess rainwater capture, farm-pond and drip-irrigation options, and watering requirements during establishment.
1. Species and Planting Material
Evaluate selected bamboo species or genotypes and their performance under local dryland conditions.

From Cultivation to Livelihoods
The project proposes linking the demonstration plantation with a separate nursery facility for mother-stock development, propagation, and plant hardening. Reliable year-round water availability and quality nursery practices will be essential.
Training activities will focus on bamboo planting, nursery management, maintenance, harvesting principles, and enterprise development. Potential opportunities include nursery services, handicrafts, furniture, construction materials, fibre, and biomass applications. These opportunities will be developed based on technical feasibility and market validation.

Connecting Field Demonstration with Scientific Research
BARE has described a proposed research collaboration with NIT Warangal covering bamboo species selection, planting material, propagation and tissue-culture research, biotechnology, growth measurement, and biomass applications.
The Wankidi field platform is intended to connect scientific questions with practical field trials, monitoring, farmer training, and potential commercial applications. The collaboration's scope, budget, intellectual-property arrangements, and implementation responsibilities require formalisation through the relevant approvals.
Building an Enabling Ecosystem
The proposal seeks government support for identifying and lawfully allotting five contiguous acres of suitable non-forest land, conducting joint departmental verification, preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR), mobilising beneficiaries, and facilitating technical collaboration.
Coordination is envisaged with relevant agriculture, horticulture, tribal welfare, revenue, forest, industry, and research stakeholders, subject to their respective mandates and approvals.
